The Hidden Faces of Cults: How to Spot Them and Stay Spiritually Safe

The Hidden Faces of Cults: How to Spot Them and Stay Spiritually Safe

Cults have evolved far beyond the stereotype of cloaked figures and apocalyptic communes. Today, they can look like healing retreats, personal development seminars, political movements, or even influencer-led online “tribes.” What defines a cult isn’t always its subject matter—it’s the power dynamics, manipulation, and psychological control at play. Cults exploit natural human desires for belonging, purpose, and transformation, but they twist those desires into tools of dependence, submission, and exploitation.

There are several types of cults, each cloaked in different ideological or spiritual language. Religious cults may declare their leader a prophet, reincarnated deity, or messenger of divine truth. Political cults are often built around authoritarian figures or extremist ideologies, turning political belief into sacred law. Therapeutic or self-help cults promise healing or success through strict systems of inner work—while demanding complete loyalty and financial investment. New Age or esoteric cults can prey on seekers by twisting occult, astrological, or metaphysical teachings to elevate the leader and shame the follower( I was apart of one a few years back🥰). Even business and MLM-based cults often weaponize motivation and loyalty to extract money, labor, and devotion from members.

One of the most chilling examples remains the People’s Temple, led by Jim Jones. Founded in the 1950s as a religious organization that preached racial integration and equality, the group slowly descended into authoritarianism. Jones isolated his followers in Jonestown, Guyana, and in 1978, over 900 people died in a mass murder-suicide, many by forced poisoning via drinking Kool-Aid(Hence the phrase "ya'll drinking the Kool-aid" back in the 90's). Survivors described how their love for community and belief in change was slowly twisted into fear, paranoia, and obedience to a man who called himself God. It’s a painful reminder that cults don’t always begin as dark—they often evolve slowly, camouflaged as something benevolent.

Here are some disturbing photos of the aftermath:

Warning Signs of a Cult or Cult-like Group:

  1. Throwing your life away- The abuser offers you resources to put you back under their spell. During this time, you may have experienced a death in your family, loss of friends or community, etc.
  2. Spiritual guidance-You loose your mind, you don’t feel seen or heard. Your ego death (dark night of the soul experience) makes you manic.
  3. Pay for salvation- If you have money put up, they will put you through a "healing program". Often times, these retreats and the like doesn't put you at the forefront, it centers them. They don't give you tools to succeed solo.
  4. Stolen sovereignty- The abuser will take what you need to calm yourself. They will dictate your healing journey and rob you of your perception. This is the playbook of a handler.
  5. Isolation-They will convince you that in order to become "free", you need to cut everyone off, and seek their community.
  6. Us-vs-Them Mentality-Outsiders are seen as “unenlightened,” evil, or dangerous. The group is painted as the only path to truth or salvation.
  7. Authoritarian Leadership -A single leader is exalted above all others and presented as infallible. They discourage or punish questioning.

When this occurs, the only thing that can save you is you! Getting your holy trinity back on track(mind, body and spirit). This takes you calling out behaviors, cross-referencing events and making logical conclusions. People like this thrive on the lack of intellectualism and sovereignty. It is important to know thyself and have a high functioning relationship with your spirits. If you can’t rely on your normal senses, how can you say you are tapped in to the supernatural? Under these types of spells, you won’t be able to trust your own senses as they corrupt the mind, implant different entities and create physical and spiritual blindness.

In order to figure why these people had control over you, you must ask yourself why and what about them was alluring? Once you figure that out, embody that! That way, those people no longer have a hold over you nor are they an asset. Become that person...a more elevated one!

The art of seduction is always mental. How can I seduce this persons mind and take it over? They need charm, charisma and the ability to speak with conviction. Most times, even say the things people are too afraid to say aloud. Recently, he was caught saying that he wanted to have his people under his control like Kim Jong Un...watch him 4K here!

This is why #47 is popular amongst his Klan. He is able to be a bigot outwardly from a high ranking position. Many low level creatures admire this and in turn will follow him to the pits of hell. Even that is too good for them!

My Story: I ended up discovering I joined a cult of my own. during this time, I had lost my Father and friends. I was in a state of lack. When you are in a mental state such as this, your auric field becomes a magnet to people and spirits looking to exploit you. Spiritually, they can use the same spirits that are oppressing you to keep you in a state of mind of seeing them as "source". This is why spiritual hygiene is important as well as family support.

When I went to New Orleans with my group, we had a conversation around me having my Grandmother's graveyard dirt. In your practice, graveyard dirt is a powerful tool. It can be used to increase spirit sensitivities, cause death and for protection. My Grandmother was a very protective woman(still is). I mentioned having it on my altar, she told me it was disrespectful to have it on her altar as it reminds them of their death(I understood that). She also told me to put it back. At the time, I thought she was telling me this because I didn't really understand "what" I had as to not cross myself up. However, as time went on, I realized that had I kept the dirt, she wouldn't have been able to pull the shit that she did on me. After I returned the dirt and eventually involuntarily leaving due to finances(because dues were dues🙄), she was exposed for the liar that she was. She tried to turn us on those that left the coven and she was simultaneously having work placed on our heads(confusion work). She was a grifter that eventually lost it all. She learned her lesson.(Touch not the anointed...)

The insane part of my story is that my spirits will always announce to me if she is "coming" or doing funny business. Nothing has happened significant since that time; other than her unblocking us...I blocked her, I don't play those games with people. The way in which I found out is I had an item(law of contact) that came from her; I touched it. At the same time, I saw a shadow move near me; It threw me off. However, I went about my day. I checked some older IG videos and I stumbled across one that she liked years ago. I clicked on the views and I saw that she had unblocked me( it showed the "follow" button)(For context: She would block all people that left the group or those that she had a falling out with. That was her insane protocol..."It's just business"-her words, not mine).

In conclusion, stay safe. Don't allow yourself to be anyone's punching bag or meal ticket. This was a morbid blog post, I know. However, this is a serious matter. These types of people roam this Earth looking for weak people. Most times, its a life or death matter. The world is cold. Make sure you keep something hot for them(mojo/charm bag). May those people impacted by Jim Jones, rest in peace. I know that site is definitely a spiritual hot spot that needs veneration....
